September 19-24: Arctic military exercises and new fields launch
The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation staged wide-scale military exercises near the New Siberian Islands practicing defending the Northern Sea Route from potential military aggression. The exercises’ scale suggests the country expects the probable adversary to be a country, not an international terrorist organization. The country’s geopolitical and economic national interests protection is passed as the reason for military expansion into the Arctic. The country continues to develop the Arctic natural reserves despite suspension of the Arctic shelf development, as evident from the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoe field launch. It is the northernmost land field in the country.
