The Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District will inspect all the extension wells.
There are about 700 wells on the island. They were drilled in 1960s. Some of them will be closed after the inspection.
Reports on the news were published after a Regional Expert Board for Natural Resources Management meeting.
The inspection will begin in 2017, according to Yuliya Chebotareva, the head of the Department for Natural Resources Management, Forestry Affairs, and Oil-and-Gas Industry Development.
Specialist will determine which wells are no longer informative, i.e. appeal to neither miners nor geologists. The government plans on getting rid of such unnecessary and environmentally hazardous facilities before 2025.
The environmental program will be financed in the framework of a pentalateral agreement, according to Ms Chebotareva. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation, District government, and large mining companies are the parties under the agreement.
The Board meeting is concerned with subsurface resources management issues related to provision of environmental safety in the District.
Heads of fuel & energy companies, supervisory agencies representatives, heads of the District municipalities, and representatives of regional agencies of federal public authorities participate in the event.
The Board will work till November 10.
